Affordable housing is one of the most urgent challenges facing North Texas, and Leilani Barnett believes every Texan deserves the stability, dignity, and opportunity that comes with a safe place to call home. But today, far too many families are being pushed out of their neighborhoods as rents skyrocket, starter homes vanish, and wages fail to keep pace with the cost of living. Teachers, nurses, young families, and even seniors on fixed incomes are finding it harder each year to stay rooted in the communities they love. This crisis didn’t happen by accident—it’s the result of years of underinvestment, speculative development, and policies that prioritize corporate profits over people’s needs. Solving it requires bold state action. We need to expand funding for affordable housing development, support first-time homebuyers, and strengthen protections for renters who are too often at the mercy of unpredictable rent hikes. Smart zoning reform can encourage mixed-income neighborhoods and make it easier to build diverse housing options, including duplexes, townhomes, and accessory dwelling units.Affordable housing is the foundation of strong schools, thriving communities, and a healthy economy. North Texans deserve a future where working people can live close to their jobs, raise families, and grow old without fear of being priced out.
